You would rarely see Bengalis in there. They’d be filled with builders. Almost every table had full English breakfast on their plates. The sausages and bacon were off-putting, however there was some curiosity over the taste. Almost 20 years on, I’ve found a cafe that sells a halal full English. Would you believe I brought my whole family in to order the supreme full works breakfast?! I converted to Islam in May 2008. As a child I didn’t see many converts in the borough. Growing up, I remember the only halal options were Indian restaurants or places miles away from the borough. Eating halal food was my biggest change, like giving up pork bacon and sausages. Nowadays you can get halal bacon and halal sausages, so I can’t say I am missing out on that anymore. Even supermarkets now sell halal food. They closed up shop about three years after I opened my business. Sausages were part of our diet in Algeria, so I found it strange to hear that the local Muslims didn’t have sausages. I make my own sausages and I get a lot of Muslims buying them. I have a diverse range of customers, French, English, Asian, Somali.
